What Is the History of Grand Prairie, TX?
Back in 1863, Grand Prairie was a small settlement that belonged to Alexander McRae Dechman after he purchased nearly 240 acres of land by the Trinity River. It had the name of “Dechman.” A few years later, Dechman filed a town plat with Dallas County. When the Texas and Pacific Railway arrived a decade later, they named the depot “Grand Prairie” based on earlier map labels. The Postal Service later named the Post Office in the area “Grand Prairie” to avoid confusion, and the name stuck. The town got its charter in 1909. In its early history, Grand Prairie was predominantly an agricultural town.
