What Is the History of Garland, TX
The city we know today is a byproduct of two rival settlements merging. Around the 1870s, the Duck Creek and Embree settlements grew and expanded around the Sante Fe Railroad depot. A post office dispute between the two settlements led to a merger in 1887, resulting in the formation of the newly named town of Garland. It became incorporated in 1891. At the time, the area had fewer than 500 residents, but it continued to grow with the development of hotels, churches, and cotton gins. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed most businesses a decade later, causing residents to rebuild. By the 1920s, Garland had taken control of its own utilities and was growing rapidly.
